Sidewalks and walkways sink and settle over time for a number of reasons. Frost heave, poor compaction and erosion can all contribute to this problem.
Frost heave is caused by the freezing and thawing of water in the ground. When freezing temperatures cause water in the soil to expand, the ground pushes up against your sidewalk or walkway slab. As the temperature rises, this water melts back into the ground, leaving behind pockets of air that create voids beneath the concrete slab. These voids can cause sidewalks and walkways to sink and settle unevenly or even collapse entirely.
Poor compaction during installation is another common cause of sinking walkways and sidewalks. When a concrete slab is poured, the ground below it needs to be compacted so voids don't form below it. When a sidewalk or walkway is installed, and the ground underneath it is not compacted correctly, the surface will not be able to support its own weight and will eventually sink into the ground below, crack and create tripping hazards.
Erosion can also lead to sinking sidewalks and walkways. Erosion can occur if there isn't proper drainage around the sidewalk or walkway, such as downspouts being too close to the slab. Erosion can also occur from heavy rain or snow melt. Again, if there isn't proper drainage around the slab, the water will wash away the subgrade from under the slab, leave them unsupported and cause them to sink and settle. No matter the cause for your sunken and settled sidewalk or walkway, Maritime Concrete Lifting can restore them to their original level quickly and easily.
